Reham al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellowship (RAF)

The Reham al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellowship (RAF) is a General Assembly-mandated, annual programme that brings excellent young (22-35 years old) journalists from developing countries and economies in transition to UNHQ in New York to report on the opening sessions of UNGA every September. Established in 1981 and currently named after a young UN communications officer who tragically lost her life in the 2003 Baghdad bombing, the Fellowship is a unique opportunity for these journalists to gain an in-depth understanding and reporting experience on the work of the UN, as well as to network with leading media outlets in New York and gain new skills through tailored training courses.

Since its founding, the Fellowship has been awarded to over 600 journalists from 168 countries. Past Fellows report increased support for the UN's work after their respective programmes, and many seek to cultivate closer ties with their local UN offices after their return.

Applications for the 2024 RAF Fellowship opened on 1 February 2024. The Outreach Division of the Department of Global Communications (DGC), which administers the programme, would like to ask for your support through encouraging local and national journalists to apply for the programme. A letter from Maher Nasser, Director of the Division, is hereby attached.
