The United Nations welcomes Japan’s contribution to support people displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh and host communities in Armenia

The Government of Japan has announced an Emergency Grant Aid of US$ 3.6 million in support of the Inter-Agency Response Plan, developed by the UN Country Team in Armenia and partners, under the leadership of the UN Resident Coordinator Office and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.

“On behalf of the UN in Armenia and our partners, we applaud this generous contribution from the people of Japan to further scale efforts in addressing critical needs of people forced to flee their homes, as well as host communities in Armenia,” said UN Resident Coordinator in Armenia, Shombi Sharp.

This contribution will improve the living conditions of the refugee-like population who fled Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia in search of safety as a result of the conflict in 2020. More specifically, the contribution will support the recipient organizations in:

Provision of medical technical training to 6 hospitals and medical equipment to health facilities.
Installation of hand-washing areas at 3 elementary schools to ensure access to safe water.
Provision of hygiene kits and other relief supplies to approximately 2,300 people.
Repair and renovation of 3 evacuation centers.
Provision of relief supplies for wintering to approximately 4,000 people.
Provision of medical equipment to 17 health facilities.
Rehabilitation of 15 school facilities and provision of educational supplies.

The majority of funding under this grant from the people of Japan will be channelled through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the International Organization of Migration (IOM), and their implementing partners.

Ms. Petrosyan is the head of the UN Department of Public Information Yerevan Office since June 2020. During her service at the UN, she has been in charge of the office heading the communications and public information mandate, as well as leading the UN Communications Group. Ms Petrosyan is fully engaged in the work of the RCO as well.
Ms. Petrosyan is an award-winning communications strategist that has built a strong track record of innovation ecosystem knowledge and an ability to design and translate integrated marketing communications across all levels. She is a keynote speaker and researcher in the field of neuromarketing and has been published in various international academic journals and books.Prior to her current position she has held various roles with local and international foundations, universities, communications agencies, and startups. Ms. Petrosyan holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration and Economics, Marketing, PR and Advertising from the University of Sheffield, Master’s degree in Linguistics and Intercultural Communication, Information and Public Communication Technologies and a Bachelor’s degree in Foreign Language and Literature, Pedagogy from Brusov State University.
