Statement on the International Day of the Girl Child

In the past decade, increased attention has been given to issues pertaining to Girls all around the world.

The rights of Girls have been increasingly recognized and Girls have been given a greater platform to be heard.

The International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the fulfilment of the human rights of Girls and the empowerment of Girls.

Girls have the right to an educated and healthy life. They have the right to be safe.

Despite increased attention by Governments, policy and decision-makers,  the general public as well as international organizations,  civil society and the private sector, challenges remain.

While there are still challenges to overcome, Armenia is making visible progress, particularly in engaging more girls in STEM. This means that we should join our efforts for the advancement of the resourcefulness, creativity, and tenacity of today’s Girls and tomorrow’s Women.

As in many countries, gender-based violence remains a problem in Armenia.

COVID-19 also worsened already existing burdens on Girls as well as Women.

“Let us all agree, to accelerate the efforts, and invest in the future that believes in the agency of Girls, as well as their potential and upcoming leadership,” notes Lila Pieters Yahia, the Acting UN Resident Coordinator in Armenia.
