WFP, EU and USAID representatives visited WFP’s ongoing projects supported by USAID and EU, met with conflict-affected people and host families
28 June 2021
The aim of the visit was to better understand the existing humanitarian needs and challenges people face due to the conflict and COVID-19.
During the recent mission to Tavush, Syunik, and Kotayk regions, the EU Humanitarian Aid Expert, Mr. David SEVCIK, and USAID Regional Humanitarian Advisor, Mr. John H. Patterson visited WFP’s ongoing projects supported by USAID and EU, met with conflict-affected people and host families.
Mr. Sevcik and Mr. Patterson spent time with displaced people to get a better understanding of the existing humanitarian needs and challenges they faced due to the conflict and COVID-19 pandemic. Many families expressed the need for longer-term support to be able to solve their housing and food needs. Mr. Sevick and Mr. Patterson were keen to know the living conditions of the conflict-affected people and what are their plans for the future. They were also interested in whether people had received the cash assistance funded by EU Humanitarian Aid and USAID through WFP to support food insecure and displaced people across the country.
During this mission trip with the European Union, WFP organized a visit to a nexus project. Mr. Sevcik and Ms. Silja Kasmann met farmers who were supported to grow whole grain wheat in bordering fields and sell the whole grain wheat to the nearby bakeries. The bakeries were equipped with solar stations to reduce the costs and reinvest in the expansion of the business. Bakeries received training to increase knowledge about whole grain wheat bread and bakery production. The project will create new job opportunities, enhance skills, and increase resilience in bordering communities.
