UNIDO, the EU Delegation, and Relevant Armenian Institutions Jointly Celebrated World Metrology Day 2025

27 May 2025

Yerevan, 27 May 2025 – The National Body for Standards and Metrology (ARMSTANDARD), in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Delegation of the European Union to Armenia (EUD), celebrated World Metrology Day 2025 with a high-level event held under this year’s global theme: “Measurements for All Times, for All People.”

This theme serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring and universal role of metrology. From the tools used in laboratories to the products and services relied upon in daily life, accurate measurement underpins scientific discovery, fair trade, consumer safety, and sustainable development.

World Metrology Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875, which laid the foundation for the International System of Units (SI) and global cooperation in the science of measurement. This year’s commemoration in Armenia was particularly significant, featuring the active participation of top leaders from the international metrology community—the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML).

The celebration took place at the National Body for Standards and Metrology (ARMSTANDARD) in Yerevan and brought together a wide range of participants, including representatives from government, international organizations, academia, the private sector, and other institutions active in Armenia’s quality infrastructure system. The event highlighted the fundamental importance of metrology across all sectors of the modern world. Armenia is currently progressing toward membership in both BIPM and OIML, a major step toward deeper integration into the global metrology system. The event served as a platform for dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders, including current and prospective clients of NBSM, academic institutions, universities, and other quality infrastructure bodies.

UNIDO DG Special Representative for Europe and Central Asia Josef Karl Pelikan highlighted the importance of the work being carried out in Armenia through EU/UNIDO “Support to Quality Infrastructure Project”, particularly the establishment of 4 calibration laboratories, which marked a significant achievement in the on-going partnership between the EU and UNIDO.

Leaders of the metrology community underscored the importance of metrology, as highlighted by Dr. Martin J. T. Milton, Director of the BIPM, providing access to reliable and accurate measurements for all people on equitable basis. Mr. Ian Dunmill, Assistant Director of the OIML further emphasized Armenia’s effort to become part of international metrology community.

ARMSTANDARD showcased its latest achievements, ongoing capacity-building efforts, and collaborations with international partners—all geared toward the development of a modern, sustainable, and internationally aligned quality infrastructure in Armenia.

Key messages presented during the event included: Celebrating 150 Years of the Metre Convention – Providing Measurement for All Time, for All People”, Honouring 70 Years of OIML and the Future of Global Metrology, and How UNIDO Supports Reliable Measurements for All.

Following World Metrology 2025 event a guided tour was organized, where attendees had the opportunity to explore the diverse calibration and measurement services offered by the new laboratories, helping visitors better understand the vital role of metrology in guaranteeing product quality, meeting regulatory standards, and maintaining a competitive edge in international markets.

The event underscored Armenia’s steady progress toward enhanced integration into the global metrology and quality infrastructure systems, reflecting its commitment to advancing metrology as a catalyst for innovation, economic development, and international recognition. This aligns with Armenia’s strategic commitments under the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the European Union, as well as emerging priorities—such as trade diversification—outlined in the Resilience and Growth Plan.
