This week, on 30 August 2021, UNHCR and the entire international community marked the 60th anniversary of the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness that seeks to prevent cases of statelessness from arising and which sets out rules to limit the occurrences of statelessness.
UNHCR Armenia, together with partner organizations, has created a working group composed of decision makers representing different state and semi-state agencies exploring possible avenues to prevent, reduce and eliminate statelessness and to protect stateless persons in Armenia in a systematized and sustainable manner.
Today, millions of people around the world are lacking a nationality of their own. As a result, they often face difficulty accessing basic rights such as education, healthcare, employment and freedom of movement. Eradication of statelessness in the world is a critical but an achievable task.
At UNHCR in Armenia, we support the Government in implementation of the country’s pledges in the field of prevention and reduction of statelessness. We are working together with the Government to achieve this goal by 2024 so everyone has the right to say #IBELONG..
