Armenia Integrates into the Global Metrology System to Advance Industrial Competitiveness and Trade Diversification

On 10 March 2026, Armenia became a Corresponding Member of the International Organization for Legal Metrology (OIML) and on 17 June 2026 an Associate Member of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM). It marks a significant step towards strengthening its national quality infrastructure, especially the metrology system in alignment with relevant international standards and guidelines for accurate, reliable and traceable measurements. Such alignment is essential for fostering industrial development, facilitating international trade, protecting consumers, and supporting innovation across key sectors of the economy.

Armenia’s integration into the international metrology system through OIML and BIPM membership provides access to knowledge and expertise, and enables higher-level, cost-effective model for global recognition of national measurement capabilities through publication of Calibration and Measurement Capabilities in the BIPM KCDB, which in turn supports trade and export competitiveness.

The historic achievement was made possible through targeted technical cooperation under the “Support to Quality Infrastructure in Armenia” funded by the EU and implemented by UNIDO. The project has played a catalytic role in strengthening institutional and technical capacities and modernizing Armenia’s metrology legal system. Key interventions included reforming legislative framework, upgrading calibration capabilities, reinforcing national measurement traceability systems, and supporting compliance with international metrology standards.

As a result, Armenia is better positioned to ensure that its products and services meet global requirements and diversify export markets, thereby enhancing market access and competitiveness for Armenian enterprises. Improved measurement capabilities also contribute to regulatory effectiveness, public safety, and environmental monitoring, underpinning sustainable industrial development.

The “Support to Quality Infrastructure in Armenia” project, funded by the European Union and implemented by UNIDO, aims to enhance NBSM’s capacity to deliver sustainable, internationally recognized metrology services. By reinforcing Armenia’s legal, institutional, and technical frameworks in metrology, the initiative contributes to improved trade competitiveness and export diversification, in line with the objectives of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
